RESUMO

Facultatively anaerobic bacterial strains were isolated from samples of a methanogenic reactor and, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, found to be affiliated with the family Propionibacteriaceae in the phylum Actinomycetota. Four strains with almost-identical 16S rRNA gene sequences were comprehensively characterized. The most closely related species to the strains was Brooklawnia cerclae BL-34T (96.4 % sequence similarity). Although most of the phenotypic characteristics of the four strains were identical, distinct differences in some cellular and physiological properties were also detected. Cells of the strains were Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, pleomorphic rods. The strains utilized carbohydrates and organic acids. The strains produced acetate, propionate and lactate from glucose, but the molar ratios of the products were variable depending on the strains. The strains grew at 10-40 °C (optimum at 35 °C) and pH 5.3-8.8 (optimum at pH 6.8-7.5.) The major cellular fatty acids of the strains were anteiso-C15 : 0, C15 : 0 and C15 : 0 dimethylacetal (as a summed feature). The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone MK-9(H4) and the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The genome size of the type strain (SH051T) was 3.21 Mb and the genome DNA G+C content was 65.7 mol%. Genes responsible for propionate production through the Wood-Werkman pathway were detected in the genome of strain SH051T. Based on the results of phylogenetic, genomic and phenotypic analyses of the novel strains, the name Brooklawnia propionicigenes sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate the four strains. The type strain of the novel species is SH051T (=NBRC 116195T=DSM 116141T).

BACKGROUND: Propionic acid fermentation from renewable feedstock suffers from low volumetric productivity and final product concentration, which limits the industrial feasibility of the microbial route. High cell density fermentation techniques overcome these limitations. Here, propionic acid (PA) production from glucose and a crude glycerol/glucose mixture was evaluated using Acidipropionibacterium acidipropionici, in high cell density (HCD) batch fermentations with cell recycle. The agro-industrial by-product, heat-treated potato juice, was used as N-source. RESULTS: Using 40 g/L glucose for nine consecutive batches yielded an average of 18.76 ± 1.34 g/L of PA per batch (0.59 gPA/gGlu) at a maximum rate of 1.15 gPA/L.h, and a maximum biomass of 39.89 gCDW/L. Succinic acid (SA) and acetic acid (AA) were obtained as major by-products and the mass ratio of PA:SA:AA was 100:23:25. When a crude glycerol/glucose mixture (60 g/L:30 g/L) was used for 6 consecutive batches with cell recycle, an average of 35.36 ± 2.17 g/L of PA was obtained per batch (0.51 gPA/gC-source) at a maximum rate of 0.35 g/L.h, and reaching a maximum biomass concentration of 12.66 gCDW/L. The PA:SA:AA mass ratio was 100:29:3. Further addition of 0.75 mg/L biotin as a supplement to the culture medium enhanced the cell growth reaching 21.89 gCDW/L, and PA productivity to 0.48 g/L.h, but also doubled AA concentration. CONCLUSION: This is the highest reported productivity from glycerol/glucose co-fermentation where majority of the culture medium components comprised industrial by-products (crude glycerol and HTPJ). HCD batch fermentations with cell recycling are promising approaches towards industrialization of the bioprocess.

RESUMO

We report two uncommon cases of osteosynthetic cervical spine infection. Clinical patient features, microbiological strain characteristics, diagnostic methods, and treatment were analyzed. Both patients were male, and one had risk factors for surgical site infection. During surgery, perioperative samples were positive yielding an anaerobic microorganism identified as Cutibacterium namnetense by MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed by 16S rRNA/gyrB genes sequencing. All isolates were fully susceptible. C. namnetense osteosynthetic cervical spine infections are rare. Both cases were early surgical site infections. Bruker MALDI-TOF MS appears to be an excellent tool for rapid and accurate identification. Amoxicillin seems to be an option for the treatment.

A floc-forming bacterial strain, designated HF-7T, was isolated from the activated sludge of an industrial wastewater treatment plant in Hefei, PR China. Cells of this strain were Gram-stain-positive, catalase- and oxidase-negative, facultatively anaerobic, and rod-shaped. Growth occurred at 20-42 °C (optimum, 28 °C), at pH 5.5-10.5 (optimum, pH 7.5) and with 0-8.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1 %). The major fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The DNA G+C content was 67 mol% from whole genomic sequence analysis. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, this strain should be assigned to the genus Tessaracoccus and is closely related to Tessaracoccus arenae CAU 1319T (95.87 % similarity), Tessaracoccus lapidicaptus IPBSL-7T (95.19 %) and Tessaracoccus bendigoensis Ben 106T (94.63 %) but separated from them by large distances in different phylogenetic trees. Based on whole genome analysis, the orthologous average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values against two of the closest relatives were 75.21-76.50 % and 14.2-24.4 %, respectively. The phylogenetic, genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data demonstrated that strain HF-7T could be distinguished from its phylogenetically related species and represents a novel species within the genus Tessaracoccus, for which the name Tessaracoccus caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HF-7T (=KCTC 49959T=CCTCC AB 2023019T).

INTRODUCTION: CircRNAs are closely related to many human diseases; however, their role in acne remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the role of hsa_circ_0102678 in regulating inflammation of acne. METHODS: First, microarray analysis was performed to study the expression of circRNAs in acne. Subsequently, RNase R digestion assay and fluorescence in situ hybridization assay were utilized to confirm the characteristics of hsa_circ_0102678. Finally, qRT-PCR, Western blotting analysis, immunoprecipitation, luciferase reporter assay, circRNA probe pull-down assay, biotin-labeled miRNA pull-down assay, RNA immunoprecipitation assay, and m6A dot blot assay were utilized to reveal the functional roles of hsa_circ_0102678 on inflammation induced by C. acnes biofilm in human primary keratinocytes. RESULTS: Our investigations showed that the expression of hsa_circ_0102678 was significantly decreased in acne tissues, and hsa_circ_0102678 was a type of circRNAs, which was mainly localized in the cytoplasm of primary human keratinocytes. Moreover, hsa_circ_0102678 remarkably affected the expression of IL-8, IL-6, and TNF-α, which induced by C. acnes biofilm. Importantly, mechanistic studies indicated that the YTHDC1 could bind directly to hsa_circ_0102678 and promote the export of N6-methyladenosine-modified hsa_circ_0102678 to the cytoplasm. Besides, hsa_circ_0102678 could bind to miR-146a and sponge miR-146a to promote the expression of IRAK1 and TRAF6. CONCLUSION: Our findings revealed a previously unknown process by which hsa_circ_0102678 promoted keratinocyte inflammation induced by C. acnes biofilm via regulating miR-146a/TRAF6 and IRAK1 axis.

Cutibacterium avidum is an emerging causative agent of orthopedic device-related infections (ODRIs). There are no guidelines for the antimicrobial treatment of C. avidum ODRI, but oral rifampin is frequently used in combination with a fluoroquinolone following intravenous antibiotics. We describe the in vivo emergence of combined resistance to rifampin and levofloxacin in a C. avidum strain isolated from a patient with early-onset ODRI treated with debridement, antibiotic treatment, and implant retention (DAIR) using rifampin combined with levofloxacin as the oral treatment. Whole-genome sequencing of C. avidum isolates before and after antibiotic exposure confirmed strain identity and identified new mutations in rpoB and gyrA, leading to amino acid substitutions previously reported to be associated with resistance to rifampin (S446P) and fluoroquinolones (S101L), respectively, in other microbial agents, in the posttherapy isolate. Aside from the molecular insights reported here, this study highlights potential limitations of the combination of oral rifampin and levofloxacin in patients undergoing a DAIR procedure for C. avidum ODRI and the potential need to evaluate specific optimal therapy for emerging ODRI pathogens. IMPORTANCE In this study, we report for the first time the in vivo emergence of dual resistance to levofloxacin and rifampin in C. avidum isolated from a patient who received both antibiotics orally in the setting of a salvage debridement and implant retention of an ODRI. Aside from the molecular insights reported here, this study highlights potential limitations of the combination of oral rifampin and levofloxacin in patients undergoing these surgical procedures and the potential need to evaluate specific optimal therapy for emerging ODRI pathogens.

The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Cutibacterium acnes in acne patients has increased owing to inappropriate antimicrobial use. Commensal skin bacteria may play an important role in maintaining the balance of the skin microbiome by producing antimicrobial substances. Inhibition of Cu. acnes overgrowth can prevent the development and exacerbation of acne vulgaris. Here, we evaluated skin bacteria with anti-Cu. acnes activity. Growth inhibition activity against Cu. acnes was tested using 122 strains isolated from the skin of healthy volunteers and acne patients. Comparative genomic analysis of the bacterium with or without anti-Cu. acnes activity was conducted. The anti-Cu. acnes activity was confirmed by cloning an identified gene cluster and chemically synthesized peptides. Cu. avidum ATCC25577 and 89.7% of the Cu. avidum clinical isolates (26/29 strains) inhibited Cu. acnes growth. The growth inhibition activity was also found against other Cutibacterium, Lactiplantibacillus, and Corynebacterium species, but not against Staphylococcus species. The genome sequence of Cu. avidum showed a gene cluster encoding a novel bacteriocin named avidumicin. The precursor protein encoded by avdA undergoes post-translational modifications, supposedly becoming a circular bacteriocin. The anti-Cu. acnes activity of avidumicin was confirmed by Lactococcus lactis MG1363 carrying avdA. The C-terminal region of the avidumicin may be essential for anti-Cu. acnes activity. A commensal skin bacterium, Cu. avidum, producing avidumicin has anti-Cu. acnes activity. Therefore, avidumicin is a novel cyclic bacteriocin with a narrow antimicrobial spectrum. These findings suggest that Cu. avidum and avidumicin represent potential alternative agents in antimicrobial therapy for acne vulgaris.

The present study investigated the effect of topical application of Epidermidibacterium Keratini (EPI-7) ferment filtrate, which is a postbiotic product of a novel actinobacteria, on skin aging, by performing a prospective randomized split-face clinical study on Asian woman participants. The investigators measured skin biophysical parameters, including skin barrier function, elasticity, and dermal density, and revealed that the application of the EPI-7 ferment filtrate-including test product resulted in significantly higher improvements in barrier function, skin elasticity, and dermal density compared to the placebo group. This study also investigated the influence of EPI-7 ferment filtrate on skin microbiome diversity to access its potential beneficial effects and safety. EPI-7 ferment filtrate increased the abundance of commensal microbes belonging to Cutibacterium, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Streptococcus, Lawsonella, Clostridium, Rothia, Lactobacillus, and Prevotella. The abundance of Cutibacterium was significantly increased along with significant changes in Clostridium and Prevotella abundance. Therefore, EPI-7 postbiotics, which contain the metabolite called orotic acid, ameliorate the skin microbiota linked with the aging phenotype of the skin. This study provides preliminary evidence that postbiotic therapy may affect the signs of skin aging and microbial diversity. To confirm the positive effect of EPI-7 postbiotics and microbial interaction, additional clinical investigations and functional analyses are required.

With growing awareness that what we put in and on our bodies affects our health and wellbeing, little is still known about the impact of textiles on the human skin. Athletic wear often uses silver threading to improve hygiene, but little is known about its effect on the body's largest organ. In this study, we investigated the impact of such clothing on the skin's chemistry and microbiome. Samples were collected from different body sites of a dozen volunteers over the course of 12 weeks. The changes induced by the antibacterial clothing were specific for individuals, but more so defined by gender and body site. Unexpectedly, the microbial biomass on skin increased in the majority of the volunteers when wearing silver-threaded T-shirts. Although the most abundant taxa remained unaffected, silver caused an increase in diversity and richness of low-abundant bacteria and a decrease in chemical diversity. Both effects were mainly observed for women. The hallmark of the induced changes was an increase in the abundance of various monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), especially in the upper back. Several microbe-metabolite associations were uncovered, including Cutibacterium, detected in the upper back area, which was correlated with the distribution of MUFAs, and Anaerococcus spp. found in the underarms, which were associated with a series of different bile acids. Overall, these findings point to a notable impact of the silver-threaded material on the skin microbiome and chemistry. We observed that relatively subtle changes in the microbiome result in pronounced shifts in molecular composition. IMPORTANCE The impact of silver-threaded material on human skin chemistry and microbiome is largely unknown. Although the most abundant taxa remained unaffected, silver caused an increase in diversity and richness of low-abundant bacteria and a decrease in chemical diversity. The major change was an increase in the abundance of various monounsaturated fatty acids that were also correlated with Cutibacterium. Additionally, Anaerococcus spp., found in the underarms, were associated with different bile acids in the armpit samples. Overall, the impact of the silver-threaded clothing was gender and body site specific.

In the present study, a biochemical strategy for improving propionic acid production from kitchen waste acidification by bioaugmentation with Propionibacterium acidipropionici (P. acidipropionici) was investigated. When the inoculum of P. acidipropionici was 30% (w/w) of the seeding sludge, the propionic acid production increased by 79.57%. Further, bioaugmentation improved the relative abundance of Firmicute and Actinobacteria. The results of metagenomic analysis further reveal that the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and all related pathways of Propanoate metabolism (ko00640) were enriched when P. acidipropionici was added. For Propanoate metabolism, most functional genes involved in the conversion from Glycolysis / Gluconeogenesis (ko00010) to Propanoyl-CoA and conversion from Propanoyl-CoA to propionic acid were enhanced after bioaugmentation with P. acidipropionici, thereby promoting propionic acid production. As such, bioaugmentation with P. acidipropionici was effective in the anaerobic acidification of kitchen waste for propionic acid production.

Adverse drug reactions of broad-spectrum fluoroquinolones or rifampicin are not uncommon during osteomyelitis and orthopaedic implant infections (OOII). Thus, we made an overview (i) of the prescription of fusidic acid (FA) and (ii) of FA susceptibility of Staphylococcus sp. and Cutibacterium sp. strains isolated from bone samples. All prescriptions of FA and all bone samples with positive culture for Staphylococcus sp. or Cutibacterium sp. (Reims University Hospital June 2017-May 2021) were included. All Staphylococcus aureus strains were considered as significant, whereas Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and Cutibacterium spp. strains were not if these strains grew only on one sole sample. The antibiotic susceptibility of Staphylococcus sp. strains and the susceptibility to FA of Cutibacterium sp. strains had been determined using disk diffusion methods, as described for Staphylococcus sp. in the CASFM/EUCAST guidelines. The mean FA consumption was 0.6 daily defined doses/1000 patient days. FA was prescribed for OOII due to Staphylococcus sp. and Cutibacterium sp. in 24 and 2 cases, respectively. Among 401 Staphylococcus sp. strains, there were 254 S. aureus (63.3%), 84 methicillin-resistant (20.9%) and 333 FA-susceptible (83.0%) strains. S. aureus and methicillin-sensitive strains were more likely to be susceptible to FA (p < 0.001). Among 39 Cutibacterium sp. strains, the FA inhibition zone diameter geometric mean was 28.6 mm (24-35 mm), suggesting that all these strains could be considered as susceptible to FA. These data suggested that FA could be more frequently used in OOII due to Staphylococcus sp. and Cutibacterium sp., subject to the absence of other resistant bacteria.

The gastrointestinal microflora regulates the body's functions and plays an important role in its health. Dysbiosis leads to a number of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, inflammation, atherosclerosis, etc. However, these diseases can be prevented by using probiotics - living microorganisms that benefit the microflora and, therefore, improve the host organism's health. The most common probiotics include lactic acid bacteria of the Bifidobacterium and Propionibacterium genera. We studied the probiotic properties of the following strains: Bifidobacterium adolescentis АС-1909, Bifidobacterium longum infantis АС-1912, Propionibacterium jensenii В-6085, Propionibacterium freudenreichii В-11921, Propionibacterium thoenii В-6082, and Propionibacterium acidipropionici В-5723. Antimicrobial activity was determined by the 'agar blocks' method against the following test cultures: Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella enterica ATCC 14028, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa B6643, Proteus vulgaris ATCC 63, and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644. Moderate antimicrobial activity against all the test cultures was registered in Bifidobacterium adolescentis АС-1909, Propionibacterium jensenii В-6085, and Propionibacterium thoenii В-6082. Antioxidant activity was determined by the DPPH inhibition method in all the lactic acid strains. Our study indicated that some Propionibacterium and Bifidobacterium strains or, theoretically, their consortia could be used as probiotic cultures in dietary supplements or functional foods to prevent a number of chronic diseases.

Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) has been implicated in inflammatory acne where highly mutated Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen factor (CAMP)1 displays strong toll like receptor (TLR)-2 binding activity. Using specific antibodies, we showed that CAMP1 production was independent of C. acnes phylotype and involved in the induction of inflammation. We confirmed that TLR-2 bound both mutated and non-mutated recombinant CAMP1, and peptide array analysis showed that seven peptides (A14, A15, B1, B2, B3, C1 and C3) were involved in TLR-2 binding, located on the same side of the three-dimensional structure of CAMP1. Both mutated and non-mutated recombinant CAMP1 proteins induced the production of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand interleukin (CXCL)8/(IL)-8 in vitro in keratinocytes and that of granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1ß and IL-10 in ex vivo human skin explants. Only A14, B1 and B2 inhibited the production of CXCL8/IL-8 by keratinocytes and that of (GM-CSF), TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-10 in human skin explants stimulated with rCAMP1 and C. acnes. Following pretreatment with B2, RNA sequencing on skin explants identified the 10 genes displaying the strongest differential expression as IL6, TNF, CXCL1, CXCL2, CXCL3, CXCL8, IL-1ß, chemokine ligand (CCL)2, CCL4 and colony stimulating factor (CSF)2. We, thus, identified a new CAMP1-derived peptide as a TLR-2 modulator likely to be a good candidate for clinical evaluation.

Cutibacterium is a genus often considered a contaminant when present in blood cultures, but it can also cause severe infections, especially related to implanted foreign materials. We investigated the incidence and features of patients with true Cutibacterium infection. Patients with positive Cutibacterium blood cultures between the years 2015-2020 in southern Sweden were identified through microbiology records and medical records were studied retrospectively. Cutibacterium isolates were species determined using MALDI-TOF MS. Patients were classified as having true infection or contamination according to a definition considering both clinical and microbiological features and these groups were compared. A total of 313 episodes of positive Cutibacterium blood cultures were identified in 312 patients. Of these, 49 (16%, corresponding to an incidence of 6 cases per million inhabitants per year) were classified as true infections. The most common species was Cutibacterium acnes (87%), and the majority were elderly men with comorbidities. Patients with true Cutibacterium infection often had an unknown focus of infection (n = 21) or a focus in the respiratory tract (n = 18). We identified one episode of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt infection, three episodes of aortic stent-graft infection, and one episode of infective endocarditis. Two patients, where Cutibacterium was isolated at the site of infection, had only one positive blood culture. The finding of positive Cutibacterium blood cultures should not always be considered contamination. Definitions of true Cutibacterium bacteremia with a demand that more than one blood culture must be positive may miss true infections.

BACKGROUND: Culturing of deep tissues obtained at revision arthroplasty for Cutibacterium is a key component of diagnosing a periprosthetic infection. The value of culturing explanted components has not been well described. This study sought to answer the following questions: (1) How does the culture positivity of explant cultures compare with that of deep tissue cultures? (2) How often are explant cultures positive when tissue cultures are not, and vice versa? (3) How does the bacterial density in explant cultures compare with that in tissue cultures? METHODS: A total of 106 anatomic arthroplasties revised over a 7-year period were included. Explant (humeral head, humeral stem, and glenoid) and tissue (collar membrane, humeral canal tissue, and periglenoid tissue) specimens were sent for semiquantitative Cutibacterium culture. We compared culture positivity and bacterial density when cultures of an explant and tissue adjacent to the implant were both available. RESULTS: Explants had positive cultures at a higher rate than adjacent tissue specimens for most anatomic sites. Of the shoulders that had Cutibacterium growth, a higher proportion of explants were culture positive when tissue samples were negative (23%-43%) than vice versa (0%-21%). The Cutibacterium density was higher in explants than in tissues. Considering only the results of tissue samples, 16% of the shoulders met our threshold for infection treatment (≥2 positive cultures); however, with the inclusion of the results for explant cultures, additional 14% of cases-a total of 30%-met the criteria for infection treatment. CONCLUSIONS: In this group of patients, culturing explants in addition to tissue cultures increased the sensitivity for detecting Cutibacterium in revision shoulder arthroplasty.

Modic changes (MCs) and low back pain are highly correlated and an economic burden to the society. Previous studies have shown that Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) infection can lead to MCs. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether and how C. acnes contributes to oxidative stress and nerve growth that potentially leads to low back pain. Neurons from the hippocampus or dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were cocultured with annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) with or without the presence of the C. acnes supernatant in vitro. Cell viability, neurite length, oxidative stress, and neuro-related gene expression were examined. Furthermore, samples from the patients with MCs and SD rat model of MCs were used to validate the nerve growth results. Neurons from both the hippocampus and DRG showed neurites when cocultured with AFCs in the environment with/without the C. acnes supernatant. The average neurite length was significantly longer when exposed to the C. acnes supernatant in the hippocampal neuron (217.1 ± 90.0 µm versus 150.1 ± 68.1 µm in the control group) and in the DRG neuron (229.1 ± 91.3 µm versus 149.2 ± 64.8 µm in the control group). Hippocampal neurons showed upregulated expression levels of NeuN, Map2, and Psd95, while upregulation was only seen in Tuj-1 in DRG neurons. Suppressed oxidative stress could be observed using axon growth symbols. Degenerated disc structures and abnormal bone remodelling were found in animal models and clinical samples of MCs, with astrocytes, microglia, and neurons in the disc. Therefore, C. acnes infection was found to cause back pain in the presence of MCs by promoting nerve penetration into the annulus fibrosus by suppressing oxidative stress.

This work analyzed, for the first time, the bioenergetics of PAOs and GAOs in full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for the uptake of different carbon sources. Fifteen samples were collected from five full-scale WWTPs. Predominance of different PAOs, i.e., Ca. Accumulibacter (0.00-0.49%), Tetrasphaera (0.37-3.94%), Microlunatus phosphovorus (0.01-0.18%), etc., and GAOs, i.e., Ca. Competibacter (0.08-5.39%), Defluviicoccus (0.05-5.34%), Micropruina (0.17-1.87%), etc., were shown by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Despite the distinct PAO/GAO community compositions in different samples, proton motive force (PMF) was found as the key driving force (up to 90.1%) for the uptake of volatile fatty acids (VFAs, acetate and propionate) and amino acids (glutamate and aspartate) by both GAOs and PAOs at the community level, contrasting the previous understanding that Defluviicoccus have a low demand of PMF for acetate uptake. For the uptake of acetate or propionate, PAOs rarely activated F1, F0- ATPase (< 11.7%) or fumarate reductase (< 5.3%) for PMF generation; whereas, intensive involvements of these two pathways (up to 49.2% and 61.0%, respectively) were observed for GAOs, highlighting a major and community-level difference in their VFA uptake biogenetics in full-scale systems. However, different from VFAs, the uptake of glutamate and aspartate by both PAOs and GAOs commonly involved fumarate reductase and F1, F0-ATPase activities. Apart from these major and community-level differences, high level fine-scale micro-diversity in carbon uptake bioenergetics was observed within PAO and GAO lineages, probably resulting from their versatilities in employing different pathways for reducing power generation. Ca. Accumulibacter and Halomonas seemed to show higher dependency on the reverse operation of F1, F0-ATPase than other PAOs, likely due to the low involvement of glyoxylate shunt pathway. Unlike Tetrasphaera, but similar to Ca. Accumulibacter, Microlunatus phosphovorus took up glutamate and aspartate via the proton/glutamate-aspartate symporter driven by PMF. This feature was testified using a pure culture of Microlunatus phosphovorus stain NM-1. The major difference between PAOs and GAOs highlights the potential to selectively suppress GAOs for community regulation in EBPR systems. The finer-scale carbon uptake bioenergetics of PAOs or GAOs from different lineages benefits in understanding their interactions in community assembly in complex environment.
